Direct X is basically a suite of various APIs that are used to handle different tasks regarding video, game programming and multimedia. Some of its most common APIs are DirectDraw, Direct3D, DirectSound, DirectPlay etc. That’s why, the name Direct X was suggested as shorthand word for all these APIs.
