The oldest version of media player ever developed by Microsoft had been termed as media player classic. It is the earliest version of windows media player. A great advantage of this program was that it could be copied in a small USB drive or a floppy disk easily or mailed as an attachment. It was a small, lightweight yet powerful enough program to play just AVI, MPG and MP3 files. No other file extension had support to be played by this media player.
Media player classic did not have any support for plugins or add-ons. It required little space and probably small amount of memory to be played while it was executed. During those times, it was considered as an ideal piece of player that could play the most basic file extensions. When the competition started to develop and new players like winamp, jetaudio, and real player etc. jumped in the field of multimedia technology, Microsoft realized that it was not enough to bundle windows software with an outdated small classic version of media player.
As a result the company started to bring change and developments in this program with more extensions and better computability to play other types of files as well. Eventually this lead to its name changed from media player classic to simply Windows media player. Now there was the added functionality to burn DVDs and Music CDs and arrange music and tracks in a well-organized music library. This started getting equally popular amongst many Windows users as did the other programs.
